Creating a continuous spine artwork

This tutorial will show you how to spread an image across the spines of multiple Amaray cases.

Not only is this an attractive way to package a box set of DVD's, it can also encourage customers to "complete the set" and puchase all of the discs in the collection.

Although this tutorial deals with DVD Amaray cases, the same principles apply to CD Jewel Cases, MC cases - in fact, anything in a box!

Please note that DOCdata UK provides this tutorial for information only and cannot offer technical support on it, or any application mentioned. No guarantee is made as to its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. Images shown are for illustrative purposes only.

Choose your picture carefully. Ideally, it should be a simple, bold image. Avoid using text (unless it is very large) and horizontal lines, which may not line up exactly across the finished products.

Download our Amaray Wrap Template (DVD_INL1) from our Artwork Template Wizard, which can be accessed from the DOCdata UK Homepage.

Setting up the Image

The spine on an Amaray case is 14mm wide. We will create an image, the width of which needs to be 14mm x however many Amaray cases we will use For our example, the box set contains 6 cases, therefore our image width will be 14 x 6 = 84mm.

The height will be 183mm + 3mm on the top and bottom for the bleed. There is no need for bleed on the left or right edges.

Prepare your spine image within this area.

Creating a Template

Open the template which you downloaded earlier, and go to the Master Page. Mount your other, common, artwork upon it. For example, placement of text and titles which will not alter across each inlay.

Draw a picture box in the spine, ensuring that it is snapped to the guides and the bleed limit. It's dimensions should be 14mm x 189mm.

Return to page 1. Everything which you added to the master page should now also be on page 1. Add five new pages- your artwork should be on those too.

Placing the Spine Artwork

On page 1, click the spine and use the "Get Picture" command to import the spine image. Ensure that it's offset co-ordinates are X = 0 and Y = 0.

Repeat this procedure on each of the subsequent pages, reducing X by 14mm on each page.

Import the remaining text and graphics into each page to complete it.
